The 69th Golden Globe Awards honor the best film and television for 2011 and were presented on January 15, 2012 at the Beverly Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

The night was a typical Holywood spectacle with all the big stars making an appearance.
Golden Globes vs. Oscar

As quipped by the host Ricky Gervais “The Golden Globes are like The Oscars, only without all the esteem“. This perhaps is put into perspective by the fact that The Oscars are chosen by 6000 movie industry professionals, while the Globes by about 90 full and part time journalists whose organization has a mixed record when it comes to integrity and taste.

Still, the Globes and Oscars do seen to have similar preferences often enough that the Globes have become a measure of an Oscar-hopeful’s momentum. Going into the Globes, Weinstein’s movies and stars had plenty of momentum, but after last Sunday night, they are now the ones to beat. So how will the Globes effect the chances for the front runners in the run up to the Oscars. It’s wise to consider the following:

- The HFPA likes to spread the wealth more than the Academy does. In part, that’s because they want to attract stars to their live, televised, cocktail party and they don’t want too many of them to go home empty-handed.

- The globes’ 14 film trophies were spread among 10 movies and A-listers such as Madonna and Steven Spielberg who are less likely to take home similar prizes on Oscar night.

- “The Artist” and “The Descendants” both picked up best pictures prizes in the comedy and drama categories respectively. But there are no such divisions in Oscars, only one can win.

- Also confirming its front-runner status Iranian domestic drama “A separation” which won on merit even through the starry-eyed Globe voters had a chance to give prize to red carpet goddess Angelina Jolie.

Now it’s not as if Oscar voters will pick these winners just because voters did, but they will feel better about voting for them as consensus choices now that the globes have clicked “Like” on them as well.

Oscar Nominations 2012

If you didn’t get a chance to watch the Oscar Nominations 2012 on Monday night, then don’t forget to see who the winners are on February 26th. At the 2012 Oscar nominations we witnessed the expected, the unexpected, a few surprises, and even a few shuns. Our all time Hollywood favorites, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep and many more great actors and actresses received nominations, while our popular directors, Martin Scorese, Woody Allen and Alexander Payne made it in the gate. “Hugo“, “The Artist,” “The Help” and “The Descendants” were nominated for Best Movies, and nominations for Best Supporting Actors and Actresses were also announced.

Surprisingly, “Hugo” received the most nominations on Monday night! Director, Martin Scoreses’s very first 3-D movie about a young orphan who lived in a train station in the 1930′s was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Music, Best Directing, Best Visual Effects and Best Writing and Film Editing. What’s unusual about this? “Hugo” didn’t receive a Best Actor or Best Actress nomination, which just may count against them at the Oscars in February.

Second on the list is “The Artist” receiving 10 nominations! This black and white film brings back memories of Hollywood’s Golden Age with Jean Dujardin receiving Best Actor in a Leading Role. Other nominations for the Best Director Award, the Best Screenwriter Award and Best Film Award, “The Artist” definitely has a pretty good chance of coming in first at the Oscars.

Last years all time favorite Southern drama, “The Help” received nominations in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories. Viola Davis received the Best Actress Award nomination, while Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain received nominations for Best Supporting Actress. The idea for this movie was sparked by a group of friends joining together with an idea! They decided to make a movie about Mississippi maids during a time of racial segregation in America. No wonder it has touched the hearts of so many Americans!

We can’t forget America’s most handsome actor, George Clooney! He starred in “The Descendants,” a movie about a middle aged dad trying to raise 2 daughters on his own. “The Descendants” was awarded with 5 nominations, among them, George Clooney for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Alexander Payne for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and also a nomination for Best Editing.

Very unusual, the Oscar nominations 2012 awards have gone to movies that contained very little violence or sex! About time! What is also odd is the number of foreign film nominations, including a nomination for the most original screenplay, “A Separation,” and “Footnote,” but surprisingly, we did not see Angelina Jolie receiving a nomination for her role in “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” Another surprise- why wasn’t Steven Spielberg nominated for Best Director in “War Horse?” After all, “War Horse” did receive a nomination for Best Picture.

Other nominations for the Best Picture award were the “Midnight in Paris,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” “Moneyball,” “The Tree of Life,” and a best screenplay nomination for the very funny, “Bridesmaids.” Brad Pitt was nominated as Best Actor in “Moneyball,” an Oakland A’s general manager named Billy Beane. Unfortunately, good friends, Brad Pitt and George Clooney will be rivals for the Best Actor award at the Oscars.

Best supporting actor nominee, Christopher Plummer who is 82 years old starring in “Beginners” has yet to receive an Oscar award, and Meryl Streep, nominated for Best Actress in “The Iron Lady,” hasn’t won an Oscar since “Sophie’s Choice” 29 years ago.
Oscar History

The Oscars always offer up some great laughs, some touching moments, and at least a few painful acceptance speeches.

If you are into movies or Hollywood, there is no doubt that there is nothing else quite like. Below are some of my favorite moments from years past.

1939

Okay, so I wasn’t around to witness the 1939 Academy Awards, but it makes my list because it was the first year a black performer won an Oscar. Hattie McDaniel won for her supporting role in Gone with the Wind. She was so overcome by the moment that she returned to her seat, buried her face in her hands and wept.

1973

In a most unusual move Marlon Brando decided to skip the awards ceremony in protest over the academy’s treatment of Native Americans. He sent struggling actress Maria Cruz dressed as a Native American activist called Sacheen Little feather to refuse the award.

1974

While actor David Niven was introducing presenter Liz Taylor, a man by the name of Robert Ope streaked across the stage. Quick-witted Niven famously quipped, “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

1978

While serving as presenter for the Best Actress award, Shirley McClaine suddenly burst out with, “I want to take this opportunity to say how proud I am of my little brother, my dear, sweet, talented brother.” She was referring to Warren Beatty who was up for several awards for his work in Heaven Can Wait. McClaine then added, “Just think what you could accomplish if you tried celibacy.”

1986

Upset by receiving an Academy memo explaining “how to dress like a serious actress” Cher predictably rebelled and arrived in an over-the-top Bob Mackie dress complete with headdress, exposed abdomen, and a dominatrix-like top and collar.

1992

Jack Palance provided the Oscars with one of its truly unforgettable moments when he dropped to the stage to do a series of one-handed push-ups in an effort to prove his virility.

1995

No matter how much we may love David Letterman after he hosted the 1995 Academy Awards we learned that his shtick works best from his stage. One example of Letterman’s many failed attempts at humor that night was his repeated introduction of Uma Thurman to Oprah Winfrey – over and over he introduced them, much to the annoyance of everyone.

1997

A truly feel-good moment – and one of those excitingly unexpected surprises was when newcomers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won the Best Writing Oscar for Goodwill Hunting beating out Woody Allen and other well-known writers.

2000

Halle Berry made history as the first woman of color to win for Best Actress. She gave a touching speech acknowledging that “this award is for those who’ve gone before me” and “for those who stand beside me.”

2000

Halle Berry was part of a history making moment twice during the 2000 Academy Awards. The other time was when Adrien Brody, overcome by his win as Best Actor, took Halle in his arms and planted a passionate kiss on her lips.

2007

After being passed over for many years Martin Scorsese finally won an Oscar for Best Director. While accepting his award he quipped, “Could you double check the envelop?”

2009

Few will forget the heartfelt speech given by Heath Ledger’s family as they accepted his Best Actor award. Ledger was awarded an Oscar posthumously for his role as the Joker in The Dark Night.

2011

When Melissa Leo accepted her Oscar for her role in The Fighter she was so flustered that she waved at the people sitting in the mezzanine and then she proceeded to drop the f-bomb saying, “When I watched Kate two years ago, it looked so f—ing easy!”

Here is a nice collection of Award special moments

Individuals will find that in Oscar history Most Embarrassing Moments are aplenty. They can range from having an oops moment on the red carpet, to a speech that rambles on, to an outfit that might as well just stayed on the rack.

Oscars Most Embarrassing Moments

The very first Academy Awards was the only one that did not have a media audience. These awards have been broadcast ever since, and because of this, attendees have escaped the attention of the media. If there were embarrassing moments, we could only hear about them and not see them live on television.

“The Envelope Please” is one of the most well known phrases in Oscar History. The Academy Awards is a show for awarding Actors and Actress along with writers, directors, crew, and everyone else who has partaken in the movies.

There is not a person out there who has not heard of this glitz and glamour night. There are even those people that invite groups of people for Oscar parties! Oscar parties have gone on for decades and have since then only become more extravagant. From actual red carpets, to hors d’oeuvres, to wine and cocktails, people spare no expense while watching and participating in Oscar History most embarrassing moments, which will no doubt happen!

Most of the embarrassing moments in the history of the Oscars go on to become jokes, as well as continuous chatter around the water cooler for decades. Some of the actual winners and nominees tend to get overshadowed by the outrageous stunts and outfits, and in typical Oscars history, most embarrassing moments.

Some of the Oscars History most embarrassing moments include the following:

In viewing Bjork’s swan dress, seems to be quite the featured topic of discussion at the 2001 Academy Awards. This dress was recently auctioned off on Ebay for charity. I wonder why!

Ben Stiller who made fun of Joaquin Phoenix on the David Letterman Show. This was quite awkward, to say the least. People sat there with their mouth wide open in awe. Did that just happen?

How can we forget Sally Field?! The actual quote cited within wikipedia was “The first time I didn’t feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!” Yet everyone goes around saying “You like me! You really, really like me!”

Then there was the night Angelina Jolie mentioned that she was in love with her brother. Embarrassing and awkward for all who were in attendance. Quite a shocking moment for all!

Click Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPWpHWr1L7s

What about the actor Jack Palance? Nothing more to be said here, for this jump started his career all again!

The list can go on for all those embarrassing moments captured on tape. One has to remember that no matter how embarrassing or dreadful their speech or dress was, we are all still talking and laughing about it.

In turn, when one thinks about it, they may have accomplished what they were setting out to do. We can now look forward to what is in store for making Oscars most embarrassing moments this year.

Early Oscar Predictions

December 2012

This year has been a great year in cinema, as there have been many independent films rising to the top, and several AAA films with the best star power to hit the silver screen in a long time. Names such as Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Clooney, Gosling, Leo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Viggo Mortenson all have made their way into these powerful films and directed by veterans Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, Eastwood, Woody Allen, and more.

The star power combined with the best directors in the industry behind this year’s Oscars 2012 is enough to excite any avid film lover into making their own predictions regarding this years fantastic movies and the world’s favorite actors of the past and present.

2012 Best Picture Predictions

For best picture people are already claiming that The Artist, and The Descendants are most likely to win, and it’s easy to see why. The Artist is almost a noir film made by Belgium director Michel Hazanavicius. It is more of a romantic comedy than anything, but filmed in tradition of the classics from the 1920’s. The Descendants is a much more modern film, one that tackles the darker side of love. It’s about a land baron (played by George Clooney) who desperately seeks to reconnect with his younger daughters after his wife is in a terrible accident. Both movies portray raw human emotion, but do so with a grain of salt and have a bit of humor to them as well. Both are just unique enough to stand out and have strong acting deliveries that rival that of some of the best films in history.

There are several other films that may be entering in the competition soon though that may be game changers. Several critics are speculating that War Horse and Extremely Loud are incredibly close to achieving a best bet vote for best picture of the year.

War Horse will enter the ring as a possible shoe in simply because it’s directed by Steven Spielberg. The trailer and many screen caps available now really show that his cinematic talents have not faded with time, and this World War I epic about a young man and his horse is deep and touching. It’s about a young man that is forced to join the Cavalry and his horse is the one thing he is going to miss. It touches on the bond between the young man and his horse as well as the turmoil’s of war.

Extremely Loud is another keeper and follows a young nine year old boy who spends his time as a multi-talented pacifist in New York City. This charming child is an inventor, jewelry designer, physicist and tambourine player. This is an incredibly moving film that follows the child as he searches for the lock that fits a key he found after his father was killed during the September 11 attack. This movie stars Tom Hanks who never puts out a bad movie and Sandra Bullock, both huge draws at the theatre.

There were many close calls as well that might pop up and surprise us, such as Hugo and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, This years Oscars 2012 win predictions are going to be quite difficult with the variety of excellent movies that were released, so we can only wait and see what happens.

Best Director Tips

Best director is likely to be Spielberg, but again with new comers like Michel Hazanavicius bringing us fresh new film like the Artist, it’s going to be a battle between the fresh new kids on the block, and the tested and tried star power that has guided our cinema choices for so long now.

Oscar Host 2012

Every year there is always some sort of gossip floating through various circles revolving around the one night when the best movie of the year is to be revealed. This year proves to be no different. The 2012 Academy Awards have already made their mark throughout the gossip community.

Brett Ratner, the controversial director was originally casted to produce the Academy Awards but he surprisingly pulled out due to a dramatic turn of events. He had used a gay slur during a question and answer segment with Tower Heist, not to mention that he had been previously accused of having an extremely explicit chat on Howard Stern’s radio show. With a copious amount of tweets back and forth, Ratner’s Twitter was soon blown up with explanations of disgust towards his gay slur and so due to the public’s response, he resigned from producing the 2012 Oscars.

Hosting the Academy Awards is an extremely high ranking job and many actors and actresses wait for the opportunity to be a part of such a prestigious award show. Eddie Murphy was given the Oscar Host opportunity and he was more than ecstatic until he found out that Brett Ratner pulled out. The reason as to why Murphy resigned from hosting the 2012 Oscars is because he and Ratner had proven to be creative partners and he deemed that it would be improper to continue with the show without having Ratner by his side.

Have no fear though Oscar lovers! Billy Crystal immediately stepped up to the plate to replace Eddie Murphy as Oscar Host 2012 without any hesitation. Unless another fiasco happens, our official host for the Academy Awards will be Billy Crystal.

This year’s Academy Awards have been particularly scattered with a diverse amount of drama, from losing producers to deciding on who is going to host the Academy Awards. With rumors such as Oprah Winfrey as a host and even a campaign to get the Muppets to host the awards show, the final pick was Billy Crystal.

Some of the perspective attendees of the Academy Awards include: the entire cast from Harry Potter, the usual suspects (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro, etc). If you were excited to see last year’s show, this year’s should be even more of a blast!

Getting Ready for the Oscars

The 2012 Oscars will start as always with a fashion show. As celebrities hit the red carpet wearing fabulous fashion pieces from the world’s top designers, paparazzi and fans watch in anticipation of who looks great and who just doesn’t live up to the name of high fashion this year. The Oscars award show then begins after the star-studded audience has arrived.

On December 1, 2011 the official screen credits nominees are due. For anyone who wants to nominate a movie or actor, this is an important date to remember. After this, the nominations ballots are due on December 27, 2011. On January 13, 2012, the actual nominations are concluded with the closing of the polls at five P.M. Pacific time in the US.

The next day, all of the nominations are announced at the same time that the polls closed the day before. The nominations will be announced for the 2012 Oscars at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.

The Polls

The nominations for an Oscars are very important to those who have been nominated, their fans, and the world of movies in general. On February 11, 2012, the Scientific and Technical Awards are presented to winners. On February 21, 2012, the final polls close at five p.m. Pacific time and the winners are chosen.

No one knows who the winners are until the February 26th show, which will take place in Hollywood. The excitement of the Oscars begins several months in advance, so make sure you follow all of the action carefully.

Some of the best movies and performances are represented in the Oscars. On February 6, 2012 all of the nominees gather for a luncheon that allows people to discuss the ballots, meet other nominees, and talk about movies and performances during the year. All of the nominees for the 2012 Oscars are from movies that have been produced and released during 2011, so some of the newest releases may not be included in the 2012 Oscars.

The Awards Show

You will need to check your local listings if you want to catch the Oscars in 2012, since the actual air times vary depending on the region that you live in. Most people watch the Oscars anywhere from seven p.m. until ten p.m. or later. This year, put the Oscars 2012 date in your diary as an event that is not to be missed and follow the Oscars 2012 timetable above to find all of the many different activities and gatherings that take place until the big day finally happens.

Academy Awards Facts

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are the most prestigious and popular film awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science or AMPAS situated in Beverly Hills, California started it in May 1929. PricewaterhouseCoopers since 1935 have managed the balloting process.

In 1941 the confidential envelope system started which exists till this date. This was how the phrase “the envelope please” became famous. The members of this academy are invited by the Board of Governors to join. The membership has fifteen branches each based on the different categories of awards.

What exactly is an Oscar?

Oscars History

The Oscars history and special moments are a great part of the film industry since many of the world’s great movies are recognized by this awards ceremony that occurs each year.

The Oscars are one of the most important awards for actors, actresses, directors, and any other person working professionally in the film industry, from writers to performers and everyone in between.

The Oscars have become a tradition that many people look forward to each year.

The History

The Oscars began in 1929 to celebrate the films made from 1927 to 1928, a time when movies were just beginning to become popular and more widespread among the general public. The Oscars were held in Hollywood, the same as today, in the Hotel Roosevelt.

At the first awards show, there were less than three hundred people in attendance, and tickets were only $5 per guest. During the first year, everyone knew who the winners were in advance, but this quickly changed. At the second awards show, no one knew who the winners were until after the awards show on the night of the ceremony, when the names were given to local newspapers.

Today it is still a tradition that only the nominee names are announced. The winners of the Oscars are all very closely guarded secrets until the night of the event, when millions of people around the world tune in to find out who won one of these prestigious awards in the film industry.

The Oscar statuette is one of the most recognized symbols of achievement in the film industry, and the statuette has been kept very much the same since the 1928 Oscars awards show. The award is designed to represent the five different categories of the film industry, and depicts a knight holding a sword. This design is loved by all in the film industry.

Memorable Moments

Some of the most memorable moments in the history of the Oscars are the times when great actors and actresses are honored.

For example, the Academy paid a special tribute to Charlie Chapman, an actor who wasn’t allowed to live in the US after nearly 40 years of making the states his home. Chaplin flew to Hollywood from Switzerland in 1972 to accept his award.

Honoring the stars that made movies become a staple in American culture is a special part of the Oscars ceremonies, but that doesn’t happen each year. Instead, the Academy may choose to honor a film star based on their lifetime achievements or on their trailblazing performances.

Other special moments occur when the Academy honors the people who work to make a difference in the film industry, with honorary awards going to writers, producers, and technical staff in addition to actors and actresses.

Every year, the Oscars history and special moments expands to create a history of film and film production that the entire world will remember. Honors are a special part of the awards ceremony since they celebrate the industry in a way that lets the whole world know how important the people of the industry are.

The Oscar Nomination Process

The Oscar awards are one of the most talked about and anticipated awards shows of the year. Each year, dozens of movies, including animated and short movies, are nominated.

If you want to know how films are nominated for an Oscar, you need to understand the nomination process.

Get Your Movies Seen

The first step in learning how films are nominated for an Oscar is knowing where to get your movies and short films seen. Most movies in the running will have been shown at one or more of the many film festivals or ceremonies that are sponsored or endorsed by the Academy. There are dozens of festivals around the world that are included in this category, including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Athens, Ohio Film Festival and the India International Film Festival. This is the first, and perhaps the most important, step toward getting a movie nominated for an Oscar Award.

There are then several nominations and polls that are important as well. You also need to know about the voting that takes place each year. Typically, there is about a month when the polls are opened for voting. The vote is only open to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Any member of the Academy can nominate a film, but can only vote for their specific category. For example, directors can vote in the Best Directed category, and writers can vote in the best written movie or film.

The Voting Process

In general, there must be a specific number of votes for a film before it is considered an official nominee. Any films or movies that don’t get enough votes are dropped out of the nomination. The voting process occurs several times before a winner is chosen. First, the movie is nominated by a member of the Academy. Second, members of the Academy vote for movie out of the first set of nominations. The third step is the final vote for the winner.

Each category of award is nominated and voted for, with some slight variations. Perhaps the most important thing to consider is whether or not the film makes it through the first voting process. If a film has been nominated and has made it to the second voting, then they have a great chance of actually winning the Oscar. In fact, it is often considered an honor to simply be nominated since there are hundreds of movies that are considered each year and only five to ten movies make it to the final vote.

Winning the Oscars

Learning how films are nominated for an Oscar doesn’t tell you which movie or film will actually win. There are always surprises at the Oscars, so you really have to watch the awards show to find out which movie wins the final vote from the Academy and its members.
